Dear Everyone,
I set up my PaperClip III C64 and tried some MAIL (EMAIL) using
the text file that came with it named: "samplenote." I loaded "samplenote"
into the text editor and then loaded Telecommunications. After logging in
to CompuServe I went to the MAIL! prompt. To send an ASCII message or,
in this case, the file "samplenote" which I have loaded into the text
buffer (and TEXT BUFFER is set to SEND) I entered at the MAIL! prompt --
com (for COMPOSE or create)
then at the next prompt I simply pushed the F6 key and the buffer
displayed on the screen as it was sent (transmitted). When the buffer dump
was ended, I entered: /ex in position 1 of a new line and entered "send"
at the SEND! prompt and then followed the
balance of the prompts for To: address, Subject: and My name: There
are short cuts for the "sending" part but try the above procedure and let me know
how you make out. For the ASCII SEND use the above.
If you should want to upload a Binary Program file to the LIBraries,
at the LIB Access ! prompt enter: upl filnam.ext/type:binary/pro:xmo
where "filnam.ext" is the 6-character filname and the .ext (.bin) is the
filename for the CompuServe LIBrary. Then when it tells you "Start Xmodem
Protocol ... etc." use the C=T (Commodore Key and T key -- for Transmit
from disk) and PC III will ask you for the filename on your diskette to
upload
If you want to Upload a Binary file in the MAIL section, then at the
MAIL! prompt enter: upl/type:binary/pro:xmo (leave off the filename here)
and when the display of "Start XMODEM ... etc." push C=T and enter the
filename on your diskette when PC III asks for it.
If you want to Download a file from the LIBraries, enter at the LIBrary
file Disposition prompt ! dow/type:binary/pro:xmo and when you get the
display of "Start XMODEM ... etc." push C=R (Receive a file) and PC III
will ask you for a name for your disketete and then if it is a Program file (Y or N).
I had the Modem parameters to set to None for parity and 8-bit word and
ASCII for communication type. I could NOT get the "samplenote" to UPL
as a type:ASCII and PRO:XMO but you can send your messages with the COMPose
and F6 as described in the first paragraph. Good luck and take care.
Sincerely,
Sysop/Betty Knight

Dear Everyone.
I noticed tonight when I got the C64 PaperClip III disks out and did
DIRectories that all of the files, including the DOCUMENTS, were PRG type
files and, I thought, that's why Type:ASCII won't upload. So, I sat down
tonight to see how to get the files saved as SEQuential or "printer" files
on disk. Sometimes it pays to read the manual <smile>. In your manual
read "OUTPUT TO DISK" for Printer files on pp. 106-107.
"...You can redirect the entire printer output from PaperClip III
into a disk file. This can be useful when formatting text for
transfer to another computer, or ..."
I had some success tonight with UPLoading EMAIL ASCII files.
You need to get to the File Options Menu and select "Printer Output" and
change the Device to 8 (for disk). Then you go to the Main Menu and
select "Print Document" after a pause you will be asked to enter a filename
(this is the disk filename for the file you want to upload to CompuServe).
Next load the Teleommunication program and log onto to CompuServe.
At the MAIL! prompt, enter UPL/TYPE:ASCII/PRO:X (no filename needed)
and at the display "Key <CR> when transfer is completed" use C=T
(Commodore Key and T key -- do NOT use F6) and PC III will ask you for the
filename to upload. Here enter the filename your used to save your disk
printer output. When I said I had some success in uploading EMAIL tonight,
I mean everything went all right and it mailed fine and I could read it when
I received it back, except that it was displayed in ALL CAPs and there were
extra blank lines at the top and bottom of the EMAIL. You will need to
test and try things to see why this is happening. Good luck.
I tried to upload in the CBMART Forum Message Base and the file
uploaded all right but when the upload was complete, I received this
CompuServe error message "? Illegal Control Character Encountered" and
the the message was empty so nothing was there. I would suggest you
leave a message on the CBMAPP Forum about a program that can scan and
correct your "disk print output file" of any "Illegal Control Characters."
I think I once saw a message on this over there.
That is about the best I can do on your problem with C64
PaperClip III. I hope this all has been some help to you. Good luck and
take care.
Sincerely,
Sysop/Betty Knight
P.S. I haven't had any problem with saving the Configuration to Disk by
selecting it from the Main Menu. You need to watch the top line of the
screen because you will need to use <Return> to get the C64 PC loaded and
then answer Yes to overwrite the current Configuration file.
